Sony breaks new ground with the FE 28-70mm F2 GM premium E-mount lens, which boasts a large F2 aperture throughout the zoom range, providing beautiful bokeh, high resolution and unique autofocus for stills and video, not to mention sharpness and contrast that rival premium lenses. Sharp, refined rendering with the unique, permanent F2 standard zoom lens

The FE 28-70mm F2 GM is the first G Master standard zoom lens with a fixed F2 aperture and outstanding creative latitude, making it the ideal tool for stills and video. Advanced design and optical simulation result in zoom quality rivaling prime lenses, with high F2 resolution throughout the zoom range, corner to corner, provided by three XA (extreme aspherical) elements manufactured using original technology. Even at close focus, the floating focus remains sharp throughout the zoom range, down to 0.38 m/1.25 ft.

Sony's original Nano AR II coating minimises flare and ghosting, and optical elements designed for internal anti-glare protection further limit flare, ensuring high clarity when a strong light source is present in the frame. The G Master optics deliver excellent soft bokeh for deep, dimensional images, thanks to spherical aberration carefully controlled both in design and manufacture with XA elements, as well as a newly developed 11-lamella aperture unit. Moreover, Super ED (extra low dispersion) and ED glass elements effectively reduce chromatic aberration.

Innovative technologies such as advanced optics and XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors make all this possible in a permanent F2 zoom that measures just 92.9 x 139.8 mm (3-3/4 x 5-5/8) and weighs just 918 grams (32.4 oz).

Accurate, persistent AF follow-up with immediate response

Four XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors and the latest algorithm precisely control large and difficult focus groups. Reliable focus tracking and instant response are essential when shooting weddings or sporting events, where every frame counts. The lens is fully compatible with the high-speed continuous shooting of the α9 III, which can AF/AE track at up to 120 times per second, even while zooming.

Designed for sophisticated, expressive filmmaking

Using state-of-the-art optical technology, Sony's latest lens effectively suppresses focus lock for even better cinematography. Sharpening and zoom effects can be used at F2 depth of field to create elegant, natural transitions, and critical focusing for high frame rate 4K 120p/FHD 240p4 shooting is easy thanks to high AF tracking performance. The XD linear motors and newly developed aperture unit operate quietly and also support α body breathing compensation5 with the α series' image stabilisation Active mode.

Professional handling and reliability

Important control features include Linear Response MF for intuitive manual focusing, adjustable zoom ring torque, and an aperture ring with clickable ON/OFF switch. There are also two customisable focus lock knobs, an iris lock switch and an AF/MF switch on the lens. The filter diameter is 86mm and the lens hood has a window for easy filter operation to suit the user's needs. The knobs and switches are fitted with silicone gaskets, the lens is secured with a rubber ring, and all other critical areas are precisely and carefully designed to prevent dust and moisture ingress, ensuring maximum reliability in outdoor conditions. The fluorine coating on the front element effectively repels dirt and makes cleaning easier.
