Canon EOS R1
The EOS R1 is a mirrorless camera for professionals, combining Canon's cutting-edge technology and high-end performance with the rugged durability and high reliability sought after in the flagship model. This camera dramatically improves the quality of both still images and video and meets the high demands of frontline professionals in a wide range of fields such as sports, news and video production.
This camera uses the newly developed DIGIC Accelerator image processing processor alongside the existing DIGIC X processor. The new image processing system, which consists of these processors and a new CMOS sensor, enables high-speed processing of large amounts of data and provides unprecedented advances in automatic focusing (AF) and other functions.
By combining a new image processing system with an advanced degree of deep learning technology, Canon has achieved high-speed and high-precision subject recognition. For example, the accuracy of subject tracking has been improved so that in team sporting events where multiple subjects intersect, the target can be tracked continuously, even when another player passes directly in front of it. In addition, the AF "Action Priority" feature detects subject movement by quickly analysing the subject's state. At moments in a sports match when it's difficult to predict what will happen, this function automatically identifies a particular action, such as a player shooting a ball as the main subject, and instantly shifts the AF frame to help capture the decisive moments of the game. The combination of a new image processing system and deep learning technology helps to improve image quality. Canon is implementing the image noise reduction function, previously developed and enhanced as part of the software for PCs, as an in-camera function to further improve image quality and contribute to user creativity.
EOS R1 - The Flagship
Speed, precision, and reliability, the Canon EOS R1 is built for photojournalists, sports photographers, wildlife shooters, and other image-makers who can't afford to miss the shot. The flagship of the EOS R line, this mirrorless camera sports a full-frame 24MP BSI stacked sensor, DIGIC Accelerator processing, next-gen Dual Pixel Intelligent AF, and the robust design expected from a professional workhorse.
Stacked Sensor and DIGIC Accelerator
24.2MP Full-Frame Sensor and Continuous Shooting
As a camera built for speed, the R1 sports a newly designed 24.2MP full-frame back-illuminated stacked sensor that offers impressively fast readout speeds and a staggering 40 fps top continuous shooting rate with an electronic shutter, along with blackout-free viewing and greatly reduced rolling shutter distortion. The back-illuminated design and new DIGIC Accelerator processing also help to produce high clarity and sharpness, native sensitivity up to ISO 102400, and utilize Neural Network Noise Reduction for especially clean files when working in low-light conditions.
Continuous and Pre-Continuous Shooting
For continuous shooting applications, the 40 fps shooting rate can be used in conjunction with Pre-Continuous Shooting, which allows the camera to continuously pre-buffer 20 frames over a 0.5-second period while half-pressing the shutter, prior to fully pressing the shutter—helping to ensure you never miss the critical moment of action. The EOS R1 also has a mechanical shutter, which supports a top continuous shooting rate of 12 fps.
In-Camera Upscaling
For instances when 24MP isn't enough, DIGIC Accelerator processing now enables In-Camera Upscaling, which uses deep learning to double the number of pixels both horizontally and vertically in order to produce a separate 96MP image in about 10 seconds. This upscaling can be done after the original image is shot and can also be performed at the time of cropping images in camera, saving time compared to generating a 96MP image and then cropping it afterward.
DIGIC Accelerator and DIGIC X Processing
One of the critical pieces that enables the EOS R1 to do everything is can do is the newly developed DIGIC Accelerator front-engine processor, which complements a proven DIGIC X processor. The DIGIC Accelerator is responsible for many of the continuous shooting, subject detection and tracking, and autofocus capabilities, allowing the DIGIC X to serve fully as an image processor. The combination of these two distinct processors enables the camera to better process huge volumes of data, perform simultaneous tasks at high speeds, and contributes to the quality and accuracy of deep learning features, like In-Camera Upscaling and Neural network Noise Reduction.
Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
Helping keep both photos and video sharp and stable, the EOS R1 uses a well-rounded image stabilization system using three distinct methods: in-body sensor-shift, optical, and an independent Movie Digital IS system purpose-built for video.
Next-Generation Autofocus
Dual Pixel Intelligent AF
Beyond speed, autofocus performance is the main calling card of a flagship camera. The R1's AF capabilities have been optimized to detect, track, and maintain critical focus on moving subjects, even when they are briefly obscured while shooting. This Dual Pixel system has been fine-tuned with numerous tracking features and usability assets to make it the most intelligent and intuitive focusing system in an EOS yet.
Video Capabilities and Cinema EOS Integration
6K Raw and 4K Video
Despite its prowess as a camera for stills, the EOS R1 touts strong video capabilities and supports an integrated workflow with Cinema EOS shooters. The R1 supports up to 6K 60p raw recording or 4K 60p MP4 recording using a 6K oversampling area with 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling. Proxy recording is also possible and helps expedite post-production by splitting two separate recording formats across the two separate memory cards; for example, record a 6K 60p raw version to one card and a DCI 2K 60p MP4 version to another so you can edit and grade the lower bit-rate footage and then apply your edits to the higher bit-rate version when finishing.
- 6K 60p raw internal recording using full sensor width
- 4K 60p normal LGOP recording for approximately 120 minutes
- 4K 120p and FHD 240p high-speed recording options
- Raw and XF-HEVC S/XF-AVC S formats
- In-camera custom picture profiles include Canon Log2, 3, PQ, and HLG
- Full-size HDMI Type-A for external recording
- False color, zebra display, and tally lamp functions
- LPCM 24-bit/4-channel audio
Professional Reliability and Design
9.44m-Dot OLED EVF and Rear LCD
Deemed the best viewfinder yet in an EOS R-series camera, the R1 sports an impressive 9.44m-dot OLED EVF with a massive 0.9x magnification for comfortable, clear, and bright eye-level viewing. The resolution and magnification suit a wide array of viewing conditions, and are ideal for glasses-wearing users, and the finder's optical design has also been upgraded for improved clarity. Additionally, some of the EVF optics are sealed within an airtight structure, helping to prevent fog in case of working in extreme temperature or humidity conditions.

Ahead of the game
The EOS R1 is designed to meet the extremely high demands and requirements of professional photographers. The EOS R1 features a newly developed DIGIC Accelerator image processing processor, as well as a DIGIC X processor and a new sensor - a combination that enables high-speed processing for advanced AF tracking and improved image quality. With the EOS R1, you'll be able to keep track of subjects at sporting events, even when they're momentarily hidden - for example, when subjects cross paths in a team sport. The newly developed Highlighted Action feature automatically detects the main subject in action (kicking the ball, for example) and adjusts the AF frame to match, allowing photographers to capture the important moments. The combination of new image processing and deep learning technologies contributes to improved image quality.
